Humanity, in its need and desire to use nature for survival and comfort, often removes itself from the ongoings of the natural world, disregarding the need to protect it, and swapping it for the need to protect ourselves from its harshness and inconveniences. My work as a whole aims to capture the way we’ve created a gap between ourselves and the environment we depend on, while extending a branch of connection through the care and commitment in which they were crafted.
In my work, I approach nature through the lens of an outsider, exploring humanity's removal from it, and unwillingness to sacrifice in order to bridge the gap. My creative process draws from the way nature grows and creates its own tapestries. I use textiles and found objects because of how the medium aids an organic artmaking process, similar to the way that nature expands and propagates, and my work harnesses the qualities of textiles to explore the issues and intricacies of the natural world. Their ability to stretch, fasten, mend, and be manipulated for utilitarian purposes mimics the qualities of nature, alongside their ability to multiply and deteriorate. Aesthetically, my work is brightly colored and detail-oriented, involving  pattern, repetition, and careful attention to handcrafted elements. My goal is to invite viewers in at a glance, and allow them to slowly examine the details of the piece, encouraging them to question the purpose of the work and how it relates to them personally. I create immersive scapes such as Jungle and Underbelly with recycled materials that can be interacted with through touch to mimic those ecosystems that are often too fragile to explore without damaging- inviting viewers into the beauty and playfulness of nature while still highlighting the ever growing gap between us and it.
A majority of my work involves hand stitched tapestries and textile collages, made with clothing tags, primarily the ones found sewn on the inside of garments. They are unflashy and dense in text, detailing care instructions that often go ignored and unread. As textiles and clothing grow more disposable, and trends fleeting, my use of hand-stitching serves as a juxtaposition, treating the tags with a level of care that we do not often give our clothes. By treating these often ignored objects with such care, I want the audience to reflect on the way they approach and consume clothing- as a necessity, an indulgence, or a means of expression. My work What We Carry focuses on the personalization of clothing, and how they can be utilized, repaired, mended, and seen as an extension of ourselves. Pieces such as Fire Tapestry and Made In reflect environmental decay caused by the rapid production and disposal of garments due to the modern emphasis on trendiness and cost-effectiveness over utilitarianism and durability.
